The Sonnet from the Cathedral of Santa Marta

The cathedral is by the sea

She is made of stone and white as snow

She is a witness to history

It is a place of worship and dignity

She has Rodrigo de Bastidas

Bury the founder of this city

He came from Spain by ship

He sought gold and fame and fortune

He found Santa Marta Bay

He founded the first city

He soon died of a wound

He rests in his cathedral

The cathedral honors his life

She is his monument and blessing

The Haikus from the Cathedral

Cathedral

White and beautiful on the horizon

A light for the city

The bells are ringing

They call for prayer

The people come

The door is open

She shows the way to the altar

Where God awaits us

The windows light up

They paint the saints

With colors and light

decorate the walls

They show the artworks

With shapes and meaning

The ground supports us

He keeps the graves ready

With name and time

The ceiling protects us

It forms the kingdom of heaven

With stars and clouds

The organ plays us

She sings the songs of God

With sounds and words

The cross reminds us

It shows the Son of God

With love and sorrow

Cathedral

She is the house of God

And ours too

The Poem of the Cathedral

I'm going to the cathedral

I feel small and humble

I see the beauty of architecture

I see the splendor of art

I go to the tomb of Bastidas

I read his name and date

I think of his life and his work

I think of his city and his country

I go to the altar of God

I kneel and pray silently

I thank him for his grace and goodness

I ask him for his help and wisdom

I'm leaving the cathedral

I feel big and thankful

I see the beauty of nature

I see the splendor of life.
